Yes, EVERYONE drives from LA to Vegas on a Friday... but it's unlikely their taste in music is as good as mine (as long as you like... everything). 27/f, smoker, looking for a passenger (preferably female, will consider the fellas if you're willing to have a chat on the phone first) to share gas and conversation to Vegas tonight (5/9). I'll be leaving Sherman Oaks around 6pm, willing to pick up relatively close to the freeway on my route (101 S to the 134 E).

Zone Trip to Amargosa Opera House

I'm doing a bus trip to the Amargosa Opera House on the 12th of April. I'm comming from SF. I've got 22 extra tickets, so people from LA can come drive out and see the show, and I rented an entire campground. You can drive out, see the show and camp out at the hot springs campground thing. The Amargosa Opera house is an amazing place. Marta Becktett is like 90 years old and has been doing the same show for 40 years. Contact me for more info.

Camping trip/fundraiser for summer boat project April 29th-May 8th

Camping trip/fundraiser for summer boat project April 29th-May 8th

Camp Tipsy … on and around the weekend of May 3rd… fun camping trip on a lake with boats and performance and art installations.

OK. I need to catch up. It’s all happening kinda quick… so it’s hard to report on something when your already doing the next thing. But there is this big project that I’m working on and I wanna talk about it. There was an idea that was put forward that I signed on to. To build a raft out of foam and wood. Send it down the Mississippi with a bunch of idiots. I committed to do the propulsion system. The end of the story is that it went from Minniappleass to St. Louie, roughly. It took 2 years to traverse that 750 miles. In all, 150 people traveled on the craft. Sometimes as many as 40 at a time. That craft is now gone. The Mississippi won. This summer we are doing it again. But this time, it’s the Hudson. Starting upstate NY with a destination of Long Island City with 7 homemade and/or modified boats and/or rafts. Swoon does the art. For propulsion, we pull motors out of cars and run them on bullshit: bio-fuel or worse. Solar powered electric canoes. It’s all absurd but actually kinda techy. None of it’s easy. You think building at Burning Man is hard, try building on water. You drop the tool, it’s gone. Boats catch fire. Bottom out. Weather. Rough conditions. No where to park. Toilets. Rain. Breakdowns: Mechanical or mental. Staph. Cooking for 25 people. No refrigeration. Rednecks. Alligators. OK, there are no alligators. But all the other stuff. A boat trip ‘ll make a man outta ya.

I am doing a camping trip on and around the weekend of May 3rd in a location about 2/12 hours from San Francisco. The location is on a beautiful lake. We have the site from Tuesday the 29th to Thursday the 8th. There is a very, very limited number of people who can go. A few hundred at most. But it’s going to be really great. We have all the propulsion systems here, in my shop. We are building 3 test crafts this very week (at NIMBY, if ya wanna come help). I’m calling the campout Camp Tipsy because it’s cute. Camp Tipsy will have TONS of entertainment and stuff, but it will also have a bunch of boats. It’s a boat thing. Bring a boat or borrow one of ours. We are going to do a big communal kitchen. It’s really warm there, and really pristine. It’s a great nature moment.

Camp Tipsy is a fundraising device for the project in NY this summer. All the proceeds collected will go to the SUPER EXPENSIVE transportation of the propulsion systems. A project like this costs well over a hundred thousand dollars, and it’s all done with donations. Our fundraising goal is $22,000. Ouch. So we are asking for donations of (gulp) $100. Yea, it’s kinda a lot. But it’s all real. And it’s totally worth it. I’ve been pouring time and effort into this event. I might be crazy out of

We have a big kitchen that goes under a big tent. It’s all communal. Kinda. They’ll be meal time capers and nightly instigators of foods, but more anarchy then democracy. All run by Food Hacking master Chef Mark Powell. The kitchen will have all the basics and stuff. More on that later.

Every night we have a few feature performers. Mellow, fun, cool campfire music. And such.

Floating art. Boats. Swimming. Dogs. Kids. Building stuff. Sailing. Biking.

It’s all sounding too wholesome. But after all, wholesome is the new decadence.

The trip is not about the money, but a TON of effort is going into it. Please pay the hundred bucks (or more if you can afford it). If you are absolutely flat busted broke and just have to go we can work something out… but if I don’t hit my fundraising number I can’t go to NYC. $22G is a ton of money. If 220 people pay $100 for this camping trip, I’ll probably make like $14g or so. It’s all so expensive. You have to RSVP, I’ll put you on another mailing list specifily for this event. You must pay in advance to hold your spot and you must say which days you would like to be there. I am not supposed to have more than 200 people, the place is pristine and they wanna keep it that way. So I am trying to be organized.

Please invite people!!!!! But lets start with friends and friends of friends first. Please do not post this to lists yet. Lets hand pick the people we wanna camp with. There is a reason I have waited to give the dates… I don’t want to disappoint people. We DEFINATLY want this to go well so we can return. I’d love to do Camp Tipsy every year.

You confirm with PayPal: chickenjohn@chicknejohn.com

I've already paid for the spot and stuff. It's ours.

The spot is like 2 ½ hours north of SF. I won’t tell you where it is until later. It’s super warm there. It’s not in the mountains. It’s beautiful. The lake is awesome. You can ride bikes and stuff.

I just bough 4 paddle boats.

There is so much more information to give, but for now lets just see how this works.
Word To The Bus

Just a quick note to let The Bus know that I am thinking of it. I acknowledge that I have been neglecting The Bus of late and I want it to know that, while my current schedule has set limits upon our time together, I eagerly look forward to our future. I hope The Bus understands and trusts that it is my deepest desire and intention to continue riding it.

A Season In Hell #13: Theme From A Season In Hell

A Season In Hell #13: Theme From A Season In Hell

Sometimes I get nostalgic. I moved a lot in my life, an average of once every two years. I went to ten schools in thirteen years (K-12), and the one thing that was a constant was music. Music and TV. The two things that were constant were music and TV. And family. The three…three things that were constant were music, TV, family and the ever increasing amount of sarcasm that made it into my humor.

I made it down for the weekly KFJC (http://kfjc.org) staff meeting this past week, for the first time in about seven years. I’m hoping to do a show a month there. I’ll keep you posted.

With that I bring you this latest episode. If you’re a fan of nighttime police dramas, then you’ll enjoy this show.

Also, I recently saw Radio Moscow play 12 Galaxies in SF (http://www.12galaxies.com/flash.html). Check out their MySpace page, and support live music. I also have a few San Francisco artists in this show, including punk polka faves Polkacide, the Japanese yodeling cowboy Toshio Hirano, and Sesame Street cover band Cookie Mongoloid; you’ve never heard anything like them before.
A Season In Hell #12: Waiting for the Man

***Warning*** Because of the need for server space, I will be removing Episode #1 and possibly #2 by Thursday, August 2nd, 2007. You have been warned.

I spent a year in DC last week. I was there for an education conference, and I had the luxury of seeing the New York Dolls perform at the legendary 9:30 Club. The club has been open since the 70’s, but obviously in a very different location. What a great club; amazing sound and stage. The Dolls were incredible too. Only Sylvain and Johanson are alive from the original lineup, but the rest of the band seriously kicked ass. They have a new CD out, go get it.

I got to walk “The Mall”, which is the federal gov’t area. Quite impressive, even if you don’t like the schmuck who lives in the white house right now.

This week I include some early NY Dolls. I also have some live tracks from Tom Waits with the Kronos Quartet doing the theme to my favorite show: “The Wire”. If you haven’t seen this great police drama on HBO, you’re missing the best written show on TV. Some live Lou Reed shows up near the end of the podcast today. A real rarity is included in the guise of Neil Young. He never released “Chrome Dreams”, but all of the music made it on to something eventually. This version of “Powderfinger” never did.
Doin It To Death

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am so pleased to announce my triumphant return to…dang, that sounded a bit blech! Let me start over.

Good friends:

You’ll be happy to hear…like I’m expecting you all to slap me on the back or something. Ok, I’ll get it right this time.

Party People:

We’re going to have a funky good time at KFJC 89.7fm (http://kfjc.org), this Thursday, May 3rd from midnight to midnight, with the long anticipated 24 hour “Doing It To Death, A James Brown Birthday Special”, featuring live & rare recordings, interviews, dance contests, fashion show, testimonials and tributes. Hosted by Myself, Spliff Skankin, Hawkeye Joe, KJ Dweller, Mr. Lucky & more.

I’ll be on from 8pm to midnight, bringing the show to its absolute climax with some rare JB’s James Brown instrumentals, and some serious live James Brown you have not heard anywhere!

I hosted several radio shows at KFJC between 1988 and 1997 under the air name Reverend Dah Wave, including a mid-day Jazz/Soul/Funk show, where every day from noon to noon-thirty it was “The Brown Bag Lunch”, 30 minutes of Mr. Please, Please, Please itself. I haven’t done a show there since 1999. It’s the best station in the West, and other than the great WFMU, the tops in all the land.

If you’re close to Foothill JC, in the SF Bay Area, tune in to 89.7FM, if you’re outside the area, please do yourself the favor and tune in any time during the show. Remember: midnight to midnight. You have no excuses.

Now, go on out and do you thang!

John Hell
Aka: Reverend Dah Wave (at least for one more night)

bus ride from coachella: a report from #8

leave time 11:26am
airplane graveyard
landcaster's broken dreams and damnits home town
stop for lunch: pizza chalet
crash up derby on tv
pineapples in the salad bar
the wait staff were visibly disgusted by us.
back on the bus
i sat in the handjob chair
and made a beautiful nut bowl.
each gas station stop, we tromped through
completely dominating the the scene, until we hit mohave,
and the diner that fought time and won.
we were a pungent and motley crew.
i plowed through the door wearing the same dirty underwear, ripped fishnets,
and leftover zombie makeup from the night before
but stopped on a dime when met by things that shouldn't be disturbed.
appreciating the fragility
we walked down the interstate to the burger depot instead.
lucky egg machine was altered and sucky,
but still only 25 cents, so i got 4.
2 tops, a puzzle,
and a stingray,
reminding me of the 25 pounder currently rotting in the dumpster at nimby.
back on the bus
chicken asked me to put on a skirt,
so i made one from newspaper and duct tape.
the classified section.
once it got dark, the ride was quick.
most of the 11 slept.
some talked about oldies
and horses
and responsibilities
and owning everything that happens in one's life
good or bad.
arrival home around 12:30 am.
i was called a spaz upon my exit
while dragging a plastic horse down the stairwell.
it was a very good bus trip.

.

I just took a look at the pictures and I'm not sure I could eat there. I had no idea I was that sensitive. Scroll to the bottom, the last picture is the most unsettling...

I'd be cutting into my steak, hearing a bunch of different voices going, "You're not gonna eat that, are you?"

Forestiere Underground Gardens Bus trip?

This would make a good summer (long) day or a weekend trip.

tribe:

http://forestiere.tribe.net/

Baldasare Forestiere could have been a Cacophony member...

Forestiere Underground Gardens (1906-1946)
5021 W. Shaw Avenue Fresno Ca.
Baldasare Forestiere, designer and builder
Vernacular Subterranean

The Forestiere Underground Gardens is located on Shaw Avenue in north Fresno, a short distance east of Highway 99. It is a complex of underground caverns, grottos, patios and garden courts encircling the underground home of Baldasare Forestiere. The various sections are inter-connected with underground passageways and promenades together with an auto tunnel approximately 800 feet long that winds through the gardens. These passageways are embellished with planters of various shapes and sizes, many with built-in recessed seats of hardpan, mortar and cement. There are columns, arches and domes of hardpan--a native sedimentary stone that is pervasive in the area. Some ceilings are vaulted and carved like inverted tea cups. Others have skylights adorned with redwood arbors and pergolas with cascading grapevines. Over his living areas, Forestiere built skylights that were covered in the winter with glass to keep out the rain, yet allow in natural light.

To support the great mass of earth and to give permanence to his earthen sculptings, Forestiere used Roman arches, columns and domes. Hardpan, mortar and cement are used not only for structural purposes, but also for textural variety and beautification.

A wide variety of trees were planted throughout the gardens, some of them rare. Some of the trees are planted as deep as 22 feet below ground level. Many citrus trees were grafted with a variety of citrus, one tree having some seven different varieties. Varieties that Forestiere planted include Almond, Pomegranate, Italian Pear, Bartlett Pear, Olive, Persimmon, Avocado, Loquat, Quince, Carob, Jujube, Arbutus, Black Fig, Tangerine, Grapefruit, Orange, Kumquat, Lemon, Date Palm and Mulberry.

A small fish pond, crossed by a foot bridge, was created in the garden court off the kitchen and bedrooms. Also located in the gardens was an aquarium with a circular glass bottom through which tropical fish could be observed. On ground level there was a small lake, which has subsequently been filled in for a parking lot.

Historical significance

The Forestiere Underground Gardens were designed and hand-sculpted by Baldasare Forestiere, a Sicilian immigrant. A vineyardist and horticulturalist, Forestiere began in the early 1900s to carve and sculpt a thoroughly unique underground retreat to escape the San Joaquin Valley's excessive heat. After nearly forty years with hand tools and persistent effort, he succeeded in creating a cool subterranean complex fashioned after the "visions stored in my mind." Forestiere worked without blueprints or plans, following only his creative instincts and aesthetic impulses. He continued expanding and modifying the gardens throughout his life. Baldasare Forestiere died in 1946 at the age of sixty-seven. After his death, the Underground Gardens were opened to the public as a museum.

Adapted from the National Register of Historic Places nomination, originally prepared by Lorraine Faulks Forestiere.

The Bus Takes A Day Out

Our journey was eventfully uneventful, as is best. The direction was South. Turning off a country road, we had lunch in Hollister. We then followed a winding country road to a trailhead. Many monsters and beasts were spied along the drive, including, but not limited to: bobcat cubs, veal, and a pecker made of wood.

The trailhead lead to an alleged pond. Though sundown loomed in too few hours, we sought to martial-on through the shadowed, snow-dusted, and ice-puddled valley. I will now call this activity, Offensive Hiking. I was ready to turn back when we came upon a jawbone in the center of the trail. Onward, we finally happened upon a trail sign leading to the pond just as a man on a white horse approached from the other direction. We asked the Knight if the pond was far. He said no, but the trail was steep. We went a quarter of the way and opted to sun ourselves on some rocks. We partook of nature while some played hill-ball in the thistles.

Later, after Laser Tag at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, we're driving home on U.S. Route One. Chicken says something such as, "I'm doing what I was put here to do, drive a bus full of people up the coast on a beautiful night, gazing at the sk..." and fireworks go off smack-dab in front of us. Not your run-of-the-mill Hat Magic, that.

So we are gonna do a 'creepy' bus trip. We are gonna embrace the 3 creepy definitions as art. It's what we got.

#1. We're gonna spend Friday the 13th camped out in a cemetery of a ghost town!!!! Creepy!!!!

#2. We're gonna visit airplanes that don't fly anymore... but will creep around (cringe).... Creepy!!!!

#3. We're gonna go to hot springs where creepy guys get naked and look for loose hippy chicks. Creepy!!!!

Our trip to visit ghost towns of California looks like a good one. We will visit Calico and the surrounding area and stop in to Mojove to see the airplane junkyard. This is a camping trip, and we will likely hike a bit and sleep in tents and the like. The bus is comfortable but there will be too many of us to all sleep on it. Will will cover more then 1,200 miles on this trip. The bus goes 73 MPH so the drives are bearable. It will be cold, bring a hat. We will be north and west of Barstow. No, we're not going to Parumph to buy fireworks. Bus trips are fun and funny. If you do not know what it looks like, the bus is available on Flicker, just search "Chicken John, Amargosa" and you can see a ton of photos. This trip will definatly fill up quick. You confirm your seat (of 35) with paypal to chicken@dammit.org. Suggested donation of $100 for bus and transportation related expenses and support of the bus encouraged, no one turned away for lack of funds. Any food or camping or whatever is on you. The bus has been a great giver of happiness and joy and costs a fucking fortune to maintain and store and insure. Be generous. Thank you. Krob dj's the entire time. Dammit comes (please no other dogs). Drinking on the bus is encouraged (please use plastic cups). The bus has a mobile kitchen and we cook gormet meals. Ahem. We like it when Sean Hayes and Freddy Price come and sing songs around the fire. We enjoy Zoli's drunken bus kareokie hour. We like to meet the locals and jump in the lakes.

Please join us. And feel free to forward...

date change to July 13th

OK. I've got the trip worked out. It's all good. Great group. We really
need more people though, it's a ton of miles and fuel is, well, it's a
lot. I've mapped it out. I'm gonna try to get everyone to leave on the
13th. If we can leave on the 13th, that makes things better. If we have
to leave on the 14th, it's not the end of the world... but it would be
great to leave on the 13th. Here is the plan:

Thursday the 13th
Load up and leave as early in the evening (7:00 or so) on Thursday the
13th. Get to Reno late at night. Get hookers, gamble, get drunk.
Buffet. Get beat up by rednecks. vomit everywhere. Run away like
cowards.

Friday the 14th
Sun rises and we are still driving. We pass Wells, Nevada and continue
on to Winemukka. We vist Winners casino where I once actually won money
once and we will vist Jungo road, the gateway to the Pacific northwest.
We will make a left, and head north on a very small road. We will drive
on this road into the night. Many farms and rolling hills. Stopping to
eat the local faire at suppertime, we will find ourselves in Marsing
Idaho by morning.

Saturday the 15th
Morning in Marsing, Idaho. We meet Noyam Hale, a real estate agent and
the mother of the famous Justinian the Armenain Rubberman of circus
fame. We have breakfast and are dazzled by her charms and her old ways.
We look around Marsing and maybe buy some property. I'm not kidding.
Then we meet up with Justinian at a vintage car auction just outside of
Bosise. It's like 2:00 now. We have the rest of the day to meander
around Boise, then eat and maybe go to a club or some such... we just
have to get back in the bus and drive before like 2 or 3 AM... we drive
and cry the rest of the night and the next morning.

Sunday the 16th
We eat breakfast in a ghost town in Idaho the Justinian is going to
direct us to. We drive to Polson, Montana to the Miricle of America
museum. Spend a few hours there. It's the best museum I have ever been
to. It has ACRES of stuff, and you can play with it and touch it and
get in it and ride it and it's totally cool and run by a totally cool
guy. Acres and acres of stuff. Forever. It's amazing. We eat dinner and
maybe go on a boat ride (Polson is on a lake) then we, you guessed it,
drive and cry. We'll be tired, though...
http://www.newcyberport.net/museum/releases.html

Monday the 17th
We eat lunch in Bozeman, Montana. It's a great college town with all
the features and privileges. We hang out a little and then get back on
the road. We drive a long time. Its' amazing scenery. It's Yellowstone
country, and it's lush and hilly and smells like health. We pass the
missouri river and stop to camp out.

Tuesday the 18
We whitewater raft. Then we sleep in a hotel.

Wedensday the 19th
We wake before dawn and drive through the Dakotas and find ourselves in
Minneapolis to see the amazing Jeune Lune theatre. We get drunk and
fall down and drive and cry.
www.jeunelune.org

Thursday the 20th
In the morning we go to the House on the Rock. In the afternoon we go
to Dr. Evermoore's. I can't explain either of these things. Suffice to
say, they *could* change your life. Changed mine. We go to Madison and
hang out in the night. Whatever. Camp. Hotel. Sleep at Doc's trailer...
http://www.thehouseontherock.com/html/attraction.htm
http://www.drevermor.com/

Friday the 21st
You guys go rouge. Fly home from Chicago airport or Madison (Madison is cheaper) . A friend will drive
out from Chicago on Thursday night and hang out with us. He will stay
where you guys stay. In the morning, he is your ride to the
Chicago/Ohare airfield. By the time you get home, me and the bus will
already be in NYC. I'll have left for NYC after I dropped you guys off
in Madison.

That is the trip. I am going to continue on to NYC and anyone is
welcome to come with me. I'm gonna pick up a bunch of people in NY and
turn the bus around and go to Minnieaples and build one of these:
www.floatingneutrinos.com yea.

The money thing depends on how many people go. Likely to kick in $150
at least. I'm thinking that there are only gonna be like 13 people or
so... I wish we could get more... but it's a lot of time and the plane
ticket and stuff... it's gonna be expensive. But we gotta do it. So
please rope your friends into comming. The more people come, the
cheaper it will be. And the more fun. Please forward all over the
place.

Stay in touch if your thinking of coming... things change a bit... the
route... we're still up in the air on the leave date being the 13th or
14th... stay with me.
